What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy improves your physical condition by restoring normal body functions and prevents disability that may arise from disease, trauma or injury.

A physiotherapist has a thorough understanding of how the body works gained from many years of rigorous academic study and practical experience. Physiotherapy encompasses posture, balance and movement, knowledge of diseases, injury and the healing process.

A qualified physiotherapist is a trained medical practitioner and you do not need to be referred by a doctor to see a physiotherapist.

Dry needling

Dry needling is a technique therapists might prescribe for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. The technique uses a “dry” needle, meaning one without medication or injection, which is inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle tightness, spasm or trigger point. A trigger point is a ‘knot’ or taut band of muscle fibers located within a larger muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch and usually cause pain locally but may also refer pain to other parts of the body. Dry needling is different to acupuncture which is a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine.

Pilates

Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact mobility and strengthening movements. Pilates emphasizes proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance. Pilates is a system of movements and exercises that aim to strengthen and stretch the muscles while integrating the mind and body. Many Physiotherapists use the exercise method to help improve patients posture and body awareness and when practiced regularly can reduce and prevent injury.

Strapping

Strapping is a treatment technique Physiotherapists use to assist with limiting unwanted movement at a joint, offloading a structure where a weakness has been identified or to provide a reminder to the patient to move in a very specific way. There are a variety of strapping types and methods that can be used for specific individual problems.

Home Visits

Home visits can be arranged for patients who are unable to get to the practice. This service is mainly aimed to assist postoperative patients and ones living in nursing homes.

Sports massage

Sports massage is a type of massage that can alleviate pain occurring in certain parts of the body, which can be caused by too much physical activity. This type of massage was originally developed to serve athletes as a way to prevent and relieve injuries and loss of mobility and promote healing of injured muscle tissue. But both athletes and non-athletes can benefit from the physiological and psychological advantages of receiving sports massage therapy.

Physiological

Delayed onset muscle soreness, commonly known as ‘DOMS’, typically begins to develop 12 to 24 hours after the exercise has been performed, with the greatest discomfort occurring between 24 and 72 hours. That’s why people say ‘the second day is always worse’. Sports massage helps by encouraging blood and lymph flow throughout the body, which assists the body to remove inflammation and toxins and promotes oxygen circulation and the natural healing process.

Psychological

Sports massage therapy can help a person manage pain from stress. When a person receives a sports massage, their body releases neurotransmitters called endorphins, which act as the body’s natural pain reliever. Endorphins also help to decrease anxiety, provide pain relief, improve mood and enhance a person’s state of well-being.
